Justin Lin Slows Down for Last Days, and It’s Brilliant

I was able to preview Justin Lin's new movie, Last Days, based on a true story. This film follows 26-year-old John Allen Chau's journey to find and also fulfill his life's mission. After lots of self discovery, John embarks on a dangerous adventure across the globe to share his faith with the isolated tribe of North Sentinel Island, while a detective from the Andaman Islands races to stop him before he does harm to himself or the tribe.

Last Days is rated PG-13 and I would agree with that rating. It might be a bit confusing or misleading, since this is a faith based drama, but parents need to be aware that there is peril, a little violence and blood, language including the "f" word once. There is also an intimate scene with heavy kissing and no nudity, but they are partially clothed.

Last Days' director Justin Lin does an amazing job on this movie. American missionary John Chau is the main character, and the film follows the actor who portrays Chau, Sky Yang, through bits and pieces of his life. Chau's dangerous journey is an inspiring, yet emotional story.

The visuals in Last Days are amazing, blending realism with a quiet, cinematic beauty that mirrors the film's emotional weight. Justin Lin trades the glossy speed of his earlier work for slower, contemplative frames, using natural light, muted tones, and impressive close-ups to draw viewers into the characters' worlds.

Co-star Radhika Apte plays a determined inspector, Meera Ganali, based in the Andaman Islands who investigates and races to stop John Allen Chau's mission. I really liked her character, she was determined to find Chau, even though she faced many difficulties.

Go see this powerful movie in theaters beginning October 24, 2025!
